trailer chassis design

Chassis specs:

1.5"x2.5" rectangular steel tube, 0.095" wall (#13 gauge)

● middle tongue piece = 2.5"x2.5" square steel tube, 0.095" wall (#13 gauge)

● outside frame width = 57.5" (2.5" less than floor width)

● hub face width = 72.25"

● total length = 14'

● Dexter #9 Torflex axle, 1,000 lb. Gross Axle Weight (GAW) rating (with ~10% tongue weight, this is ~1,100 lb. Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW)  rating)

Chassis weight:

● steel frame members: 109 lbs.

● axle, axle mounting brackets, and hubs; corner gussets, tabs, and fish plates; safety chains: 87 lbs.

● accessories (rear stabilizer jacks (2), front tongue jack, coupler): 31 lbs.

subtotal chassis: 227 lbs.

● + wheels, tires, and fenders: 99 lbs.

Total: 326 lbs.

Design considerations:

● rubber torsion axle provides independent wheel suspension with shock-absorption and damping; transmits less road shock and vibration to body and contents

● axle is low maintenance with few moving parts; attached to chassis mounting brackets with a total of 4 bolts.

● powder coating on frame is durable and releases no VOCs or other harmful emissions during application
